Knitting Geekery: Joss Whedon, Firefly and the Jayne Hat

Yay!! This show was fabulous and ended WAY too soon… The dedicated fans still love it though and you can see people dressed up as the characters still at ComicCon’s and similar events.

A lot of knitters know about Firefly because of the “Jayne hat” phenomenon. What is a Jayne hat? In the Firefly episode “The Message”, the character of Jayne, receives a handknitted hat from his Mum. Without giving away the premise, should you wish to watch it, here is a wee bit of the dialogue:

Jayne: “How’s it sit? Pretty cunning, don’tchya think?”
Kaylee: “I think it’s the sweetest hat ever.”
Wash: “A man walks down the street in that hat, people know he’s not afraid of anything.”
Jayne: “Damn straight.”

Having come across this link just yesterday, I am thinking its time to pull out the DVD and rewatch the series in preparation. I never did give in to the actual knitting of the Jayne hat but…

I think I may have to break down an break out the screaming orange acrylic in celebratory anticipation 🙂

Liking this pattern for its authenticity: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/jayne-cobb-hat
