I love Frida Kahlo. Her art, her philosophy, her attitude, her personal aesthetic. I know I’m not alone in my admiration. I had recently seen this lovely photograph of her:
When, a few short hours later, I saw this pattern arrive in my inbox, I thought of Frida immediately. I had not considered making knitted or crochet jewellery before seeing this but the colour, shape and visual impact of these pieces is so in keeping with Kahlo-style, I may not be able to resist. The design potential is limitless; brilliant colours that echo Frida’s work, beading or silk flowers such as she wore could also be used for embellishment.
The original design echoes Celtic-work knots and would look great in earth toned shades of a luxury yarn. Here is the more classic, tailored version as shown on Susan’s website:
This looks to be a great stashbusting project if, like me you have a lot of silk or exotic blend leftovers or, as it was advertised, a kit with beads. And so, though I don’t know for sure what or even if, Frida Kahlo would knit… I would be remiss if I didn’t add that she did paint this well known portrait of a knitter.
Have you been to the blue house in Coyoacán? It’s amazing to walk through where she lived.
