Mmmm… Yarn… 🙂
Mmmm… Yarn… 🙂
Yikes! A month gone by already? As 2016 closes I swear it’s picking up speed.
Family and Real Life have been keeping me hopping and I couldn’t be happier to see that the slow journey back to a positive balance in my corner of world is restored. I’m still knitting like a maniac but back in the land of the living too. My boy child has returned from his “Go West young man” adventure and will be staying local. The girl has married and moved to a different province – not because her brother came home! – and she and my SIL are happy and excited to be starting a new phase of their life. This mumma is verra chuffed! Get togethers with my Mamasan and Sibs and spending time with “Handy Andy” working on making this house more of a home are a welcome diversion from the laptop.
So. What’s up in the crafty, fibre-y part of my life? A few FO’s, a WIP or two and the bones for a new KeiB Designs design. I’m overdue for a pattern release. In the interest of keeping things short ‘n sweet and getting on with my Saturday plans, I’ll do my montage thing and you can click them for more info if you want.

The WIP’s and new design you’ll have to take my word for! Several things have been set aside for projects that move me ahead in the Eat.Sleep.Knit Yarnathon 2016 – just a couple more weeks to go! I hope your weeks have been filled with whatever makes you happy – as long as it isn’t illegal, immoral or fattening – and I’ll be back soon or soon-ish… 😉
Post title has immediately precipitated singing Sublime’s “What I Got” 🙂
I got me some FO’s and some WIP’s and a whole lotta love for this Friday when Bestie and me are off to Needler’s Retreat 2016!
I am beyond grateful to have been sponsored to go on a scholarship this year – it’s been a difficult one and Retreat is one of those soul and sanity resets that I look forward to even at the end of a good year. I’ll have my camera handy as always to record slip slip knits and shenanigans.
So… what fell off my hooks and needles since the last post?
A slouchy hat with a whole lotta Vikkel going on. I winged this one to use up some gorgeous Malabrigo Rios – matches my Black Locust mitts – and to earn another achievement badge in Eat.Sleep.Knit’s Yarnathon 2016. Go Starsheep!
Next up was another stashbuster. Coppelia is a shawl / cowl hybrid and I finally knit up some of my Schaefer Marjaana. I fell in love with this 50/50 Silk Merino blend and bought a sweater or two’s worth sometime in the early 2000’s. Moving and organizing my guest room unearthed a lot of treasures. I love how the combination of yarn and pattern came together and this one will be coming with me to Retreat.
Yes. Yes, we do plan our outfits for the weekend!
On the needles I have an interesting bulky knit cowl. This is a bit of a challenge but it is for another achievement badge so worth powering through my dislike of 10.00mm needles that feel like telephone poles! I never buy “fat” yarn but this is another of Malabrigo’s – the Rasta base – in the same colourway as my BL mitts and the Vikkel Slouch hat and so, is a little less irritating to
The other WIP’s in waiting are all progressing very well. Atelier is almost finished, Ruisseaux still needs sleeves, Dulce de Leche is coming along slowly but… it’s cashmere and silk! I’m making this last as long as I can… like any luscious, sexy, sensual, tactile… err… knitting!
I’ll be casting on some socks – gasp! – to take as my personal knitting for when we have “free time”. I decide on the Haleakala socks from one of Cookie A’s sock clubs – the first year I think – I was a member for the first and second rounds and have yet to make one sock from all the patterns we received! I guess that’s the hazard of having started off designing socks almost exclusively myself. I got “socked out”. These will be cast on once we’re at Retreat so in the meantime here’s a little bit of yarn porn from Claudia Hand Painted Yarns – Addiction base in teal colourway:
Still can’t believe that I went from knitting one full pair of adult socks in less than 24 hours (Twice! My team competed and won twice) to not having finished a single pair in several years! Not a problem if a third of my stash wasn’t single skeins of Indie sock yarn…
I have a tiny bit of homework to prepare in addition to figuring out what Cons go with what cowls and what mukluks go with what shawls so better get cracking here. Hope you all have a productive week with lots of time for crafting and I hope to have some photos to share of the beautiful spot I’ll be at and some of my favourite ladies.
What’s not fun about a makeover?!
Except all the work…
The time had more than come for an investment of effort. My Etsy shop is 8 years old now and I’ve been on Ravelry since 2007. Needless to say, many photos needed updates – some still need to be scanned for upload. Things like links, tags, SEO, other social media weren’t around then and sadly some of my early posts and listings were very ‘bush league’.
Today was the day that I made time to update some old knitting project photos and with that came the motivation to do a massive revamp. I focused on Etsy and the trickle-down landed on Flickr and Ravelry. The task isn’t quite finished but close to it and I’m glad with the results. Part of the update process was to unpack, evaluate and post or pitch my many counted cross stitch kits and supplies. At one time, I was as obsessed with this craft as I currently am with knitting and the CCS stash accrued shows it! The bottom line is – I will never be able to do it all (36 kits x 1 month to complete = 3 years of samplers and that isn’t all of them!) and I have the same dilemma with my knitting. Knitting won. The prize is more room for the yarn because all of my ‘Just Nan’ sampler charts / kits are listed on Etsy and you can find those here: JN Cross Stitch. If you have any friends or family who might be ISO of these retired patterns, feel free to pass along the link. If you’d care to ‘follow’ or ‘favourite’ my shop – KeiB Designs and Knits– please do! It’d make my day.
I took the time to update several FO photos of scarves that are in my Ravelry projects and also listed on Etsy. My ‘M’amselle’ mannequin is new and a much better model than the kitchen table, floor or Ikea cot that was my background for years :). This led to tweaking my LinkedIn and adding proper tags and descriptions to all that stuff in Flickr.
There are times that I really like this OCD thing!
How was your week in fibre and life in general?
A few of the ‘Do Overs’:
A few of the Just Nan samplers available (Careful! They’re addictive 😉 ):
I swear this was the fastest year of my life!
The good, the bad, the happy, the sad… Thank you for being here. Your likes, comments and support mean more than you could know.
Wishing all of you the very best in the coming year
Here’s an excerpt:
The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 51,000 times in 2015. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 19 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.
… that I was running an adoption agency for tribbles… 😉
The novelty – and the silk mohair – is running its course. Not before I have a limited production run of two each of four unique yarn / colour combos of ‘Velloso’ cowls.
These are available for purchase now in my Etsy shop. Please take a peek and feel free to share.
I didn’t forget you – just busy with real life. That does include knitting and such but not so much to share. I’m mid-project on several items, as per normal, keeping up with store orders, looking after my Mum and adjusting to this new ‘sans Papasan’ life.
With my son away in Nanaimo, Dad was the ‘man in my life’ and it’s still a punch in the gut each time I think I’ll call to ask him the right pliers for this or how to plumb that. Ugghh… I’ve yet to adjust to my Nanny being gone in January. Anyway… neither of them would approve of any moping on their account so…
The good news is: thanks to Louise, manager at my LYS (Yarn Forward) and the constant encouragement of my Bestie (Frankie), I have a solid pattern presence at a bricks-and-mortar shop. Yay!! So if you are ever in the neighbourhood, you can find patterns and samples there.
I just wrapped up the Kitchener close on a cowl, no pattern – The Bing On My Cherry – just using up some gorgeous Elann Highland silk and a new skein of Lang Mohair Luxe and am working a super cute, easy cardigan pattern from Plucky Knitter – Put The Kettle On – in some ancient Debbie Bliss silk merino aran. I’m using more stash – Yarntini this time – to work the Leventry shawl or as I call it, Leventry-tini.
Here’s a pic or two of the knitty doings:
The BW Scarf test knit is finished and the pattern will be on its way to the Tech Editor very soon. I’m happy with this one, it was really rewarding to be able to work the complete concept – yarn base, custom colour and planned construction – all in one go.
Fashion shoot pics will come later:
With Retreat out of the way and the last of the family duties surrounding my Dad’s passing, I plan to focus on getting some WIP’s tamed and revising old patterns into my newer format. I’m taking a much needed break from my poetry blog and the occasional drama that lurks there to write a guest chapter for a friend’s upcoming book. This blog is my sanity and happy place (along with it’s Blogger twin, SMVSLT) so I’ll be hanging around. I had recently followed several new WP crafters but neglected to have post updates come to my email. I hope to get that fixed up too, I don’t want to miss anyone!
Off to the LYS to hang out for an impromptu Sit ‘N Knit with my Bestie. Wishing all of you a restful Sunday. 🙂
Shop’s been updated!
