It’s A Brand New Shiny Year

I’m looking forward to another year of fibre, friends and fun on Pointe Shoes Punk Rock And Purl and happy to see all the talented new followers and old. You keep me inspired… if not out of the yarn shops! ๐Ÿ˜‰

My 2014 projects in review can be seen on this page: Finished Knits 2014 and there’s a link on it to the project specifics for the patterns and yarns used.

I have a tradition of beginning a new project on New Years Eve and this one was no exception. Serendipitously and very appropriately, I had all the materials to start “Phoenix Rising”, a shawl by Sivia Harding Design. I’m a fan of Sivia’s patterns and the name and it’s associated story seem a metaphor for my life in general and how I’d like to see it continue this year. I don’t have a progress photo yet, I’ve been utterly engrossed in the making of it but here is a peak at the yarn – Unique Sheep’s Marici lace, the beads – 8/0 SL crystal AB’s and the pattern. The project page is on my Ravelry here.

The “Snow Glint” colourway is exclusive to Earthfaire, one of my favourite yarn store temptations.

To start the year off right, my friend Yvonne of Yvieknits Yarns is running a contest over on her blog. Yvie is the talented dyer behind the Mawata silk hankies that were used in one of the classes held this year at Needler’s Retreat 2014, taught by my lovely and talented BFF, Francine Hebert of “Fancy That”, yarn embellishments and jewellery.
You could win a skein of Yvie’s silk merino dk, so pop over for a visit ๐Ÿ™‚

As it’s the beginning of a new year, I’ll take a moment to invite you to find me on Ravelry as “KarinB” and to join the Pointe Shoes Punk Rock And Purl group there if you wish. I hope to be spending more time there and with publishing my “KB Designs” knitting and crochet patterns.

You can find my patterns on Craftsy, Etsy, Ravelry and on my Blogger home “So Many Vices, So Little Time“. I’ll get them here eventually… there really is “so little time”! I sell finished handmade items and some crafting supplies on Etsy as well.

If you’re a Social Media type, I can be found with the motley lot that hangs around on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Google+,ย Goodreads, Pinterest and others. The green buttons on the top right hand side of the page will take you to my little corner of those spots. Feel free to leave a comment below about your own other internet spaces and to join me at mine.

Sheesh! You’d wonder how any of us have time to craft, right?! ๐Ÿ˜‰

And with that – I’m back to the needles.

Cheers all!

FO Friday

It must have been a warm day in Nunavut… I’ve gone finishing crazy. Making his FO debut is my โ€œOllieโ€ – the Oliver Twist MKAL shawl. Worked to pattern (nupps and minimal beads), no mods and in the colourway โ€œYou Zig, I Zagโ€ (youโ€™ve got to pick a pocket or two boys) and with S/L chartreuse AB #6 beads. Ollie is huge and warm and totally my new boyfriend ๐Ÿ˜‰

I KNOW!! Right?!

When did I turn into “The Blockinator”?

So totally worth it to make the time. Ollie has come out huge and I’m glad, it gives the gradient colourway lots of room to be appreciated and look at all those nupps!

Loved this project. Janine is a whiz with lace patterns and I am totally smitten with the Unique Sheep’s Luxe base.

Addewid’s debut:

The beads are lit up with natural daylight. Their colour is a deep ruby – S/L ruby AB’s for my bead people. The Elle Rae yarn is a deep rich black that has a lovely sheen. Love this project like crazy and I think I may have become a blocking convert!

Oliver After One Month

As if the weeks didn’t fly by quickly enough!

When you have something to look forward to, they fly faster and often better.

Here’s my “Ollie” after completing Clue 5:

Transitions up to and including Clue 5.

Loving the “cameo” effect created by the nupps in the stocking stitch diamonds. This may be one of my favourite Unique Sheep colourways so far. I’m scheming already about how I can incorporate the various bases and colours into some sort of stashbuster blanket!

Family, Fibre and Furnaces

Once again, an entire week has flown away from me!

With all the lead up to my nephew’s wedding, I thought I’d have a little more by the way of knitting and such to show but somehow, I’ve not managed a lot other than to keep up with the Oliver Twist MKAL. I did complete Clue 4 and it’s official… I love nupps!

Here’s the detail photo of Clue 4:

KarinB’s “Oliver” Clue 4

I’m still working away on “Blob”, which is beginning to look cuddly and wearable. I’ve a second skein to work with that’ll give a unique “dip dye” effect to the prototype, one that I hope will catch the interest of some knitters once it’s published. The Manos “Fino” is a gorgeous yarn, I’m already plotting ways to buy more.

A little excitement with my furnace this week, though it’s been so warm, there’s hardly a need. I did have a broken igniter but an efficient repair man and a service contract so all worked out beautifully and winter can begin whenever it chooses to get here.

The itinerary for this year’s version of The Needler’s Retreat was emailed out early this week and I am thrilled!

My BFF, the very talented Francine Hebert of “Fancy That” yarn jewellery, will be teaching a class in knitting with silk hankies. I fully expect that my efforts at class clown will be appreciated by all our teachers this year. Once again, the venue is the gorgeous Glen House in Gananoque on the St. Lawrence and we have our favourite room as per usual (party is at Frankie and Kar’s! ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) I was really happy that we don’t have any homework to do before this year’s classes; I’m already doubting I’ll have much finished (ie: blocked) for Show ‘N Tell.
